    John Brown

    Founder, Bass, Guitar

    Brown Sugar was started by Band Leader John Brown from Grand Junction, CO. He is a seasoned multi-instrumentalist and music professional who delivers high-quality performance and seamless production every time. Equally at home on guitar, electric bass, and upright bass, he pairs classic musicality with modern gear that adapts to any venue — from intimate clubs to large halls. Over the last two decades he’s built a reputation in the Grand Valley for being organized, reliable, and supremely prepared.

    Styles performed: Pop, Country, Blues, Jazz, R&B, Rock, Funk, and Soul. Whether locking in rock-solid rhythm or crafting an atmospheric melody, John brings a polished, contemporary flair to every set. Clients and venues count on him for a consistently professional experience, flawless musicianship, and a performance tailored to the moment.

    Ivan Gygi

    Guitar

    Ivan is rooted in blues, rock, classical, and fingerstyle traditions but is best known as a jazz guitarist. In high school he played and recorded with several bands, including the national DownBeat-award–winning ska group LoFi Riot and the Crescent Super Band. He earned a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance from Utah State University in 2019, where he was selected for the top big band and jazz combo every year. He completed a Master’s degree at the University of North Texas in 2021, serving as a teaching assistant for classes and private lessons.

    Ivan has performed with renowned jazz artists such as Grammy-winning saxophonist Jeff Coffin, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, saxophonist David Sanborn, and percussionist Pancho Sánchez. While he remains an active performer, his primary passion is teaching and helping others achieve their musical goals. After a brief period in Los Angeles, Ivan relocated to Grand Junction, Colorado, to grow his teaching studio. He also teaches at Colorado Mesa University and Juniper Ridge Community School.

    Jake Oakey

    Vocals, Guitar

    Jake Oakey’s musical journey began early — singing at eight, picking up the guitar at thirteen, writing songs by fifteen and turning pro at eighteen. Since then he’s built a reputation for relentless, high-energy performances and tight musicianship, playing thousands of shows across the U.S. Highlights of his career include two Denver Nuggets halftime performances and opening slots for Robert Randolph & the Family Band, AJR, and Langhorne Slim & The Law. He’s released original music under multiple projects and was a core member of Simply in Time, Western Michigan’s busiest band for three years.

    Today Oakey fronts Stray Suns, a Colorado-based project focused on original music, and performs in Hakken Krax Howl alongside his wife. He also anchors several high-energy cover bands across the region and is a member of a professional corporate band in Denver that plays weddings, corporate events and charity functions. Offstage he lives in Monument, CO with his wife and two kids, balancing a full-time job while relentlessly performing whenever he can.

    Ryan Benthall

    Piano, Keys

    Ryan Benthall is a Colorado-based pianist, composer, bandleader, and educator whose work blends modern jazz with cinematic depth and emotional clarity. His album Sovereign Mind, released through Octave Records in partnership with PS Audio, captures his immersive and reflective compositional style — intricate yet spacious, technical yet deeply human. He leads his own ensembles throughout the region, performing at venues including Dazzle Denver, and collaborates across genres, contributing keys and vocals to projects such as Phoebe Nix.

    A graduate of University of Missouri–St. Louis with degrees in Music and Music Composition with a minor in Jazz, Ryan combines formal training with expressive spontaneity. In addition to performing and recording, he is a dedicated educator who teaches students of all ages, emphasizing creativity and personal voice. Across stage, studio, and classroom, his work is driven by a commitment to connection — creating music that resonates long after the final note fades.

  • Ed Vasquez

    Drums, Percussion

    Raised in a musical family, Ed began playing drums professionally at 15, performing at weddings and similar events. He graduated from the Musicians Institute College of Music (drums/percussion) in Hollywood and spent more than 15 years performing professionally in Los Angeles, working in showbands, big bands, theater productions, and on both national and international tours with recording artists.

    His collaborations include Moon Martin (composer of "Bad Case of Lovin' You"), South Korean pop artist Kim Won Sun, Fontaine Brown, and Marty Haggard. Additional credits feature engagements with Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, and Harmony Cruises showbands, as well as the Mile High Big Band in Denver, CO.
